How does a spray tan work?
The active ingredient Dihydroxyacetone - (aka - DHA) that gives you that suntanned skin look, is often derived from plants, certain fruits and other natural sources such as pure sugar cane and sugar beets also by the fermentation of glycerin. It has been approved for application to the skin for decades now. It is a safe, well tolerated product. Most dermatologists highly recommend self-tanning as an alternative to traditional UV tanning. The active ingredient soaks into the outer most layers of your skin and causes the superficial layers of the epidermis to oxidize. It is simple and safe. When quality spray solutions are applied correctly, and the person being sprayed follows the before & after directions properly. The results will be a gorgeous, natural color like that of a summer suntan. It should fade out evenly and be longer lasting.
DHA has been approved for cosmetic application use by the FDA, the Canadian Health Ministry, and the EU nations. It is considered nontoxic and non-carcinogenic. Because DHA does not use the skin's melanocytes to make the skin tan it is recommended as a cosmetic application for improving the overall appearance of your skin. DHA-based sunless tanning has been recommended by the Skin Cancer Organization, American Academy of Dermatologists, Canadian Dermatology Association, The American Cancer Society and the American Medical Society. There have not been any reported or known side effects from the use of DHA. If you have ever had an allergic reaction to self-tanners, we recommend that you abstain from spray tanning.
Q: How should I prepare for my spray tan?
A: Your skins preparation is vital to achieving the best possible results. Do all showering, skin exfoliating, waxing, shaving, manicures, pedicures 24 hours prior to coming in for your spray tan. Choose a light skin moisturizer just after showering and preferably a non-oily or thick, heavy mineral oil type moisturizer. Anything that contains Mineral Oil is strongly discouraged from using before or after a spray tan. We carry a nice & super affordable array of both pre and post, all organic skin care products for all our services.
It's best to arrive to your spray appointment with clean skin, no moisturizers, perfumes, facial lotions, make-up or body deodorant on.
Be sure to bring loose - dark clothing to wear for after your spray tan and a pair of flip flops work great for footwear. You don’t want to wear any tight clothing that could potentially disrupt the spray tan solution applied so soon after application or on your feet & ankles from socks and shoes etc. It does wash out from most all fabrics with the exception of leather & some silk/linen type fabrics. We do not advise taking part in any aggressive physical activities that create sweat like going to the gym or taking a long brisk walk or run the same day your tan was applied to avoid all possibilities of sweating immediately after being sprayed. Water is the enemy to a spray tan during the absorption/developing time. It’s strongly advised to avoid all water contact for up to 12 hours. Tears, washing dishes, sweating, swimming, showering, all that kind of thing. Bring an umbrella with you if it’s raining outside just in case.
The formulas we use, develop to their full-color potential once 24 hours has passed from the time your were sprayed. Your 1st rinse off shower time varies depending on what solution was sprayed onto you and can vary from 1 to 12+ hours. A rinse off is just that, a quick water only rinse, without soaps, shampoos, cloths, sponges etc.. Only the water and your hands to remove the applications bronzer color that you see on your skin immediately after being sprayed. This bronzer is not your real spray tan result, will not absorb into the skin and needs to be rinsed off in the recommended timeframe the spray technician has advised you to do.
Q: What to wear or not to wear for a spray tan?
A: Many people wear dark bathing suits; dark colored underwear or they use our one time use disposable garments which are available at the salon. Some people prefer to have no tan lines at all by spray tanning nude or partially nude and that too is fine with us. If you do wear a bathing suit, please make sure all tags, ties or strings that dangle are tucked in and out of the way, along with a barrette or other ‘hair up’ tool to keep your hair off your neck and back areas. Wear no jewelry of any kind. Earring studs are acceptable but please, no necklaces, navel charms, bracelets, toe rings etc. You get the idea.
Q: What experience should I expect during the session?
A: You will get ready for your spray tan in a private studio room and get undressed. You may choose to wear your own bathing suit, underwear or our disposable spray-wear or nothing at all as discussed earlier in this Q & A section - whatever is most comfortable for you. We will apply a thin layer of barrier cream to prevent any discoloration to the fingers, toes, palms of hands and most likely address elbows, knees, ankles and back of the heels to ensure an even, natural looking tan. We also offer barrier crème, nose plugs and disposable hair nets. Hair nets are particularly recommended if you have blonde or highlighted hair. We will then discuss your preferred shade and current skin color.

The spray when applied, feels like a light, cool mist, most people are pleasantly surprised that there are no offensive odors to our products. As the spray is applied, you will immediately see color appear on your skin. This is the 'bronzer color guide' color that allows the technician to see where the spray tan is going and make sure it is evenly applied. This initial color is attractive, and gets a little darker over the hours while the actual spray tanning product begins to absorb, process and create your skins final tan color.

They are fast drying which also help prevent your freshly applied tan from being disrupted when you put your clothes back on and drive to your next destination. Don’t worry if when you get home you notice a little smudge where an item of clothing scuffed your spray tan; when you do your 1st rinse off, the action of the water generally evens out these small areas just fine. Again, we only use the finest quality spray tan formulas that perform at the highest levels and are not comparable with many of the spray formulas found in the general market place or that you may have experienced in other salons. Q: How long will my spray tan last?
A: For most people 5 – 7 days is average and for those who follow good aftercare instructions by faithfully moisturizing, only lightly shaving, patting dry with the towel after showering vs.: rubbing, basically treat the spray tan a bit gentle and with a basic level of care thus slowing down the skins natural exfoliation process and can possibly last up to 10 days of tanned color still existent. Of course, the color will fade over the days as our skin naturally exfoliates itself, but when cared for, it will fade much more slowly and also quite evenly, without any weird issues. Your Tan will fade similar to that of a natural sun tan when given proper after care treatment. Moisturizing daily is a great habit for your skin with or without a spray tan involved.
Q: My hands & feet look lighter than the rest of my body?
A: We usually prefer to go a little lighter on the hands and feet, elbows and knees, as these areas look better with a lighter touch as the skin absorbs self-tanner differently than the rest of your body. In our experience, if your spray tan has been applied properly - others will simply notice that you look great! However, if too much is applied, it may settle into your knuckles and between the fingers. This can look fake and unnatural. For this reason, our technicians prefer to spray your hands and feet a little lighter than the rest of your body. With this in mind, we ask that you respect our technicians' professional experience and allow them to handle the spraying of your hands and feet gently. Of course, when the next day arrives and you still feel you need a touch up for those areas we would be happy to oblige.
Q: How often can I get a spray tan?
A: You can get a spray tan just one time for a special event or you can visit us as needed to maintain a year-round glow. It is best to exfoliate any old spray or self tanner from your skin before coming in for a fresh application.
Q: How do I remove any older spray to prep for a new spray?
A: Contrary to popular belief you can't just scrub off most spray tans. At least not our spray tans. If you don't believe us - give it a try! The spray tan is absorbed into the outer dead layer of your skin and gently fades as your skin naturally exfoliates. If you go into the shower with a grainy scrub you will have very little success removing the tanned layer that easily. The thing to do is to take a long, hot soak in the tub (saunas and Jacuzzi's are also great) the idea is to deeply soften the skin and get it steamy. Then is the time to work with a scrub, wash cloth, loofah or a pair of quality scrubbing mitt. We recommend sitting in hot bath-water with household baking soda or using it as a gentle exfoliator or your own quality exfoliator product in the shower after your skin has become very moist and soft. It may take a few attempts to thoroughly remove the layer (s) of tanned skinned prematurely by using this unnatural removal method.
